Lee Chia Hao produced a remarkable comeback to defeat Japan’s Riki Takei 21-15, 14-21, 25-23 in a thrilling 70-minute opening-round clash at the Taipei Open.
Roared on by a passionate home crowd, the Chinese Taipei men’s singles star fought back from the brink of defeat, saving four match points in the deciding game to book his place in the second round.
Lee said competing on home soil gave him extra motivation and energy.
“It feels different from playing overseas. Being at home with so many fans cheering for me makes me even more excited and gives me greater motivation.”
Despite Takei pushing him to the limit, Lee stayed composed in the crucial moments, crediting the crowd’s support and his coach’s tactical advice for helping him pull through.
“The fans gave me the fighting spirit to keep going. I also tried my best to stay calm and execute the tactics my coach gave me.”
The victory is a timely confidence boost for the 27-year-old, who has been looking to rediscover his best form since reaching the All England final last year. Lee believes improving his mentality has been the key focus.
“The most important improvement is my mindset. I’m constantly working on it and trying to become a better player.”
Lee will next take on compatriot Wang Yu-Kai, who also progressed after a straight-game victory, guaranteeing Chinese Taipei a place in the quarter-finals.
Confident with the backing of his home supporters, Lee is determined to keep fighting.
“I have so many fans here and so many people supporting me. Their encouragement gives me great strength. I’ll keep playing and never give up.”
