FIFA’s Head of Global Football Development Arsène Wenger says the governing body will review the use of hydration breaks following mixed feedback during the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The tournament introduced mandatory three-minute hydration breaks midway through each half, regardless of weather conditions, as part of FIFA’s player welfare initiative.

“Sometimes people didn’t like it, and we have to analyse after the World Cup what the impact was.”

While the breaks were designed to help protect players, critics argued they also created additional opportunities for commercial advertising during matches.

Wenger believes the breaks did not significantly affect results but acknowledged that FIFA will consider fan feedback before deciding whether to continue the policy in future tournaments.

“We’re here to serve the people who watch football, and we’ll draw our conclusions after the World Cup.”

Spain coach Luis de la Fuente defended the measure earlier in the tournament, saying the pauses helped players recover during physically demanding matches, particularly in hot conditions.

Wenger also praised FIFA’s expansion of the World Cup from 32 to 48 teams, describing it as a successful decision.

“Many questioned it before the tournament, but I believe it was the right decision. It gave more nations an opportunity, and it has been a great success.”
