The Boston Celtics could be unexpected beneficiaries as the uncertainty surrounding Kawhi Leonard’s proposed move to the Toronto Raptors continues.
According to reports, the NBA’s investigation into whether the Los Angeles Clippers violated salary cap rules may not be completed until 2027, leaving Leonard’s blockbuster trade to Toronto in limbo.
The delay could have a major impact on the Eastern Conference. With Leonard unavailable, the Raptors may miss out on adding a two-time Finals MVP to a roster already featuring Scottie Barnes, significantly reducing their chances of emerging as a top contender.
For Boston, that means one fewer elite rival to worry about in an already competitive conference.
The Celtics also have another reason to monitor the situation closely. They own the Clippers’ 2028 first-round draft pick through a previous trade, giving them a vested interest in Los Angeles’ long-term outlook.
Had the Leonard trade gone through, the Clippers would have received Brandon Ingram, Gradey Dick and two first-round picks, accelerating their rebuilding process. With the deal stalled, Los Angeles could remain stuck with its current roster and limited assets, potentially increasing the value of the draft pick Boston owns.
Despite the ongoing investigation, both the Clippers and Raptors remain hopeful the trade will eventually be completed. However, uncertainty over possible penalties involving Leonard continues to cast doubt over when—or if—the blockbuster move will become official.
