The Golden State Warriors may have missed out on adding a superstar this offseason, but their biggest opportunity to strengthen the roster could come later in the season.
NBA insider Marc Spears believes Golden State is better off waiting until the February 2027 trade deadline, when more teams may be willing to make significant roster changes.
According to Spears, the Warriors have several valuable trade assets, including Kristaps Porzingis’ expiring contract, along with the tradable contracts of Draymond Green and Jimmy Butler. Those pieces could become key if teams decide to rebuild or reshape their rosters during the season.
Spears also suggested that Green and Butler are experienced enough to understand if the franchise makes difficult decisions in pursuit of another championship.
Rather than pushing for an immediate move, he encouraged Warriors fans to be patient, saying the team’s focus should be on building the strongest possible roster for the business end of the season.
Golden State pursued several marquee names this offseason, including Giannis Antetokounmpo, Jaylen Brown and LeBron James, but each ultimately signed elsewhere.
The Warriors also face uncertainty with an aging core. Butler is recovering from a torn ACL and is expected to return in January 2027, while Green is 36, Butler is 36, Al Horford is 40, and Stephen Curry will celebrate his 39th birthday during the season.
Despite those challenges, the Warriors remain committed to competing and could be one of the league’s most active teams when the trade deadline approaches.
